SERIES: Dust and Diamonds
TITLE: Part 4 - “Treasure & Trust”
SPEAKER: Pastor Pierre du Plessis
Scriptures—
Exodus 32; Exodus 35; Matthew 6:21, 33
Summary—
Pastor Pierre spoke about the deep connection between our possessions and our trust in God. Through four key biblical narratives, Pastor Pierre showed that God speaks about money not because He needs it, but because our treasure reveals where we place our trust. His message emphasized that obedience to God is essential, and that financial stewardship anchors our hearts in Him rather than in worldly security. He challenged us as believers to examine whether our treasure aligns with our trust in God—especially in times of uncertainty—and calls for faith that’s demonstrated through action with our resources.
Key Takeaways—
When obedience becomes optional rather than essential, it weakens our ability to truly follow Jesus.
Jesus spoke often about money and possessions because where we place our treasure exposes where our heart truly is.
Like the Israelites’ gold in the desert, our resources test whether we’ll create false security or invest in God’s purposes.
God’s blessing isn’t about status but alignment with His restorative work; true revival always overflows in generosity.
Seeking God’s kingdom first means trusting Him above our needs and proving our faith through obedient stewardship.
Discussion Questions—
How does the statement “obedience is better than sacrifice” challenge our modern understanding of worship and religious activity?
In what ways might prosperity actually be more spiritually dangerous than financial need, and how have you seen this play out in your own life or community?
Pastor Pierre suggests that trust and treasure are inseparable - what does your current spending and giving pattern reveal about where your heart truly trusts?
The Israelites turned their gold into an idol when Moses delayed - what modern equivalents do we create when we face uncertainty and God seems silent?
Pastor Pierre mentions he lacks faith to decide weekly whether to give, so he made a commitment - what role does pre-decision play in spiritual obedience versus moment-by-moment choice?
If blessing is meant to make us agents of God's restoration in the world rather than privileged individuals, how should this change what we pray for and pursue?
Practical Application—
Ask yourself: "What does my spending reveal about where my heart truly is?" Share your discoveries with a trusted friend or accountability partner.
Look for three specific opportunities this week to be generous beyond your normal giving. (Examples include buying someone's groceries, giving an unexpected gift, serving someone financially.)
Identify one area of financial uncertainty or fear in your life. Pray specifically about surrendering that area to God's provision.
Closing Prayer—
Close your session by praying for freedom from fear about provision. Pray for wisdom to use our resources for kingdom purposes. Finally, pray for faith even if it may not make sense in the moment.
