SERIES: Life After Death
TITLE: New Wine, New Wineskins: Embracing God's Call to Change
SPEAKER:
Pastor CJ Cody

Scriptures—

Luke 5:33-39

Summary—

Pastor CJ calls us to embrace a simple truth: new demands new. In Luke 5:33–39, Jesus’ parable of new wine and wineskins shows that we can’t fit new life in Christ into old habits and ways of thinking. What God wants to do requires letting go of what’s familiar and comfortable. The call is to trust His process, recognize when seasons are changing, and choose daily surrender so we can walk fully in the new life He’s given us.

Key Takeaways—

  • The Faith isn’t about whether God will show up, but whether we will remain faithful when He does.

  • New life in Christ requires letting go of old habits, mindsets, and attachments.

  • We can’t step into new seasons while clinging to what’s familiar and comfortable.

  • God gives clear signs when it’s time to change, calling us to trust His timing and plan.

  • The safest place is in God’s will, even when it feels uncertain or uncomfortable.

  • Walking in the new requires daily surrender, obedience, and a willingness to let go.

Discussion Questions—

  1. What does it look like to remain faithful to God, even in difficult or uncertain seasons?

  2. Where might you be holding onto old habits or mindsets while trying to step into something new?

  3. How does the “new wine, new wineskins” principle challenge your approach to spiritual growth?

  4. In what ways is comfort or familiarity keeping you from moving forward in God’s plan?

  5. What signs has God been giving you that it’s time to make a change, and how have you responded?

  6. What step can you take this week to surrender, trust God’s provision, and walk in obedience?

Practical Application—

  • Choose one change – Identify one specific action God is calling you to take this week and commit to it.

  • Stay accountable – Ask someone to check in with you and support you in following through.

  • Reflect and respond – Identify what God is doing, what you need to release, and one practical step you’ll take this week

Closing Prayer—

Close your session by praying as a group. Pray to thank God for His past faithfulness and His good plans ahead. Confess any areas where you’ve been holding onto the old out of fear, comfort, or familiarity. Ask Him for courage to make necessary changes, wisdom to recognize His direction, faith to trust His provision, and strength to say “yes” to His will daily. Lift up one another and pray for each person’s specific area of surrender, asking God to help you walk fully in the new life He’s calling you into.
