Heart Habits: Habits of Purpose in an Age of Distractions
Speaker: CJ Cody
Scripture Reference: Romans 12:1-2
Sermon Recap:
We likely have some habits that we practice by default, but there are many things in life that happen only when we are intentional. For example, to become buff, physically fit, loose excess weight or financially secure requires that we intentionally practice certain habits to realize the transformation desired. Some things don’t just happen, but instead require application and participation. If we are able to develop and walk out certain heart habits, and avoid killer distractions, the trajectory of our lives can be changed.
The Apostle Paul, in the Book of Romans, gives a blueprint for believers to be transformed into disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ. He instructs us to present our bodies as a living sacrifice and be transformed by the renewing of our minds. As we renew our minds, we develop new ways of thinking and new practices that become habits that ultimately change our behavior.
The specific path to transformation starts with motivation. We must first decide that we want to experience a change. Our motivation will then propel us to making a commitment to take certain actions. We can strengthen our motivation by keeping in the forefront of our hearts and minds the awareness of what God has done for us. To guard against distractions and keep our minds focused, we must do things to remind ourselves of why we are on this path. It would also be helpful to stay in community with like-minded people and to have the accountability of others who will speak into our life. The final step requires discipline which involves repeating those actions long enough for them to become a habit. As we keep our eyes on Jesus and remain faithful and consistent in our actions, transformation will occur.
