What's one area where you're asking God to grow you?

SERIES: Better U
TITLE: The Battle Within: Living Life the King's Way
SPEAKER:
Pastor CJ Cody

Scriptures—

Matthew 6:33; Matthew 6:10; James 1:22; 1 Peter 5:8; Galatians 5:16–17; James 1:14; Matthew 26:41; Mark 14:38

Summary—

Pastor CJ reminds us that the Christian life involves a daily battle between the Spirit and the flesh (Galatians 5:16–17). Instead of blaming our struggles on circumstances, we're challenged to recognize the role of our own sinful nature and choose to walk by the Spirit. Victory comes by feeding our spirit through prayer, Scripture, worship, and community while being intentional about what we allow to shape us. He encourages us to fight the right battle, guard what influences us, and pursue honest accountability through transparency with trusted believers.

Key Takeaways—

  • Jesus is both our Savior and our example, showing us how to faithfully live for God.

  • Every believer faces a daily battle against the world, the devil, and the desires of the flesh.

  • Victory comes by walking in the Spirit—focusing the fight, guarding what feeds you, and surrounding yourself with godly people.

  • What you consistently feed will grow, so nourish your spirit through prayer, Scripture, worship, and healthy influences.

  • Lasting freedom requires transparency, accountability, and practical obedience in everyday decisions.

  • Small compromises can become major strongholds, so respond quickly to the Spirit’s leading and address sin before it grows.

Discussion Questions—

  1. How does knowing that every call from God comes with challenges change your perspective on difficult seasons?

  2. In what ways are you feeding your flesh more than your spirit, and what changes can you make this week?

  3. What does it look like for you to walk by the Spirit instead of relying on your own strength?

  4. Who are the trusted people in your life that provide accountability, and are you being honest with them?

  5. What practical habits could help you grow spiritually and better hear God’s voice each day?

  6. What small compromises or hidden struggles is God calling you to address before they become stronger?

Practical Application—

  • Focus the fight – Identify one spiritual struggle and make a plan to respond by walking in the Spirit.

  • Fix your feed – Remove influences that feed your flesh and replace them with content that strengthens your faith.

  • Find your fighters – Ask a trusted believer to be an accountability partner and invite them into your spiritual journey through honest conversation and regular check-ins.

Closing Prayer—

Close your session by praying as a group. Pray for each person’s specific struggles and the areas where they are experiencing the battle between the Spirit and the flesh. Ask God for wisdom to recognize His voice and follow the Spirit’s leading in daily decisions. Pray for courage to be honest, bring struggles into the light, and seek meaningful accountability. Ask for strength to make practical changes in habits, choices, and routines that help them grow closer to God and walk in victory.
