SERIES: Better U
TITLE: First Things First: Prioritizing God's Kingdom in Every Area of Life
SPEAKER:
Pastor CJ Cody

Scriptures—

Matthew 6:25–33; Matthew 6:24; 1 Corinthians 16:2; 2 Corinthians 9:7; Matthew 6:9–13; Matthew 22:37–39; Hebrews 10:25

Summary—

Pastor CJ challenges us to examine what truly comes first in our lives. In Matthew 6:25–33, Jesus calls us to seek first God's kingdom, trusting that He will provide everything we need. Rather than chasing security, success, or self-sufficiency, we're invited to build our lives around God's priorities. He reminds us that following Jesus transforms how we use our time, finances, and relationships. As we put Him first and trust His provision, we exchange anxiety for the peace that comes from living His way.

Key Takeaways—

  • Jesus is not only our Savior but also our example, showing us how to live each day.

  • God’s promises are connected to His priorities—when we seek His kingdom first, He provides what we need.

  • Kingdom living is reflected in how we manage our finances, time, relationships, and worship.

  • Wise disciples make intentional, God-centered decisions before challenges or temptations arise.

  • Prioritizing God brings peace, strengthens our souls, and helps us trust His provision over our own efforts.

  • Following Christ may require letting go of lesser things, but God uses our obedience to shape and sustain us.

Discussion Questions—

  1. What does it look like to seek God’s kingdom first, and what areas of your life still compete for first place?

  2. How does seeing Jesus as both Savior and example change the way you make daily decisions?

  3. If someone looked at your calendar and budget, what would they say is your highest priority?

  4. How have you experienced God’s peace and provision when you put His kingdom first—or anxiety when you haven’t?

  5. What kingdom-focused decisions do you need to make now instead of waiting until the moment comes?

  6. What worries, habits, or priorities is God asking you to surrender so you can trust Him more fully?

Practical Application—

  • Prioritize your time – Put God first by scheduling daily prayer, Bible reading, and intentional time for rest and worship.

  • Prioritize your resources – Honor God with your finances by giving intentionally and evaluating whether your spending reflects kingdom priorities.

  • Prioritize your relationships

Closing Prayer—

Close your session by praying as a group. Pray for greater faith to trust God's provision and believe that He will faithfully supply every need as you seek His kingdom first. Ask Him for wisdom to reorder your priorities according to His values and for courage to let go of anything that competes for first place in your life. Lift up the specific needs shared during your discussion, trusting God to work in each situation. Pray, “Father God, help us to be people who seek first Your kingdom and Your righteousness. Let our lives reflect Your priorities, and may everything we do bring glory to Your name. As we put You first, teach us to trust that You will provide all we need for Your kingdom on earth as it is in heaven.”
