What is something still on your bucket list?
SERIES: Dust and Diamonds
TITLE: Part 1
SPEAKER: Pastor Pierre du Plessis
Scriptures—
Matthew 6:21, 24; Psalm 20:7; Acts 17:28
Summary—
Sunday’s sermon explores the human tendency to place trust in worldly things rather than in God. Pastor Pierre discusses how our fallen nature, inherited from Adam and Eve, leads us to seek security in idols - modern equivalents being money, success, or self-reliance. The message emphasizes the importance of recognizing these misplaced trusts and actively choosing to put faith in God instead, particularly through the practice of giving.
Key Takeaways—
Our fallen nature leads us to trust in worldly things rather than God.
We often create "idols" as objects of hope and security.
Practicing generosity is a practical way to break the hold of misplaced trust.
True security and fulfillment come from trusting in God, not worldly possessions.
Discussion Questions—
In what ways do we still create 'idols' in our modern lives, and how can we identify and address these misplaced sources of trust?
How can we reconcile our fears and anxieties about the future with the biblical teaching to trust in God's provision?
In what ways does our relationship with money reflect our deeper spiritual condition, and how can we use giving as a tool for spiritual growth?
How does the concept of “agency” conflict with the idea of submission to God, and how can we find balance between the two?
What does it mean to “take off the old self and put on the new self” in practical, everyday terms?
How can we cultivate a mindset of contentment and trust in God's sufficiency, especially in a culture that emphasizes accumulation and self-reliance?
In what ways can we actively reflect God's light to others, rather than focusing inward on our own needs and desires?
Practical Application—
Identify one area where you tend to trust in yourself or worldly solutions more than God. Commit to praying about this area daily, asking God to help you trust Him more.
Practice giving in a way that stretches your faith. This could be financial giving or giving of your time and talents in a new way.
Memorize and meditate on this verse: "No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.” (Matthew 6:24) Consider how this truth challenges misplaced trust.
Closing Prayer—
Close the session by praying this prayer together: Lord, forgive us for trusting in idols instead of You. Turn our hearts back to Your truth and help us rely fully on Your strength. You alone are our hope and our God. Amen.
