SERIES: Father’ Day
TITLE: It Starts Today
SPEAKER: Pastor Eric Rogers
Scriptures—
1 Corinthians 4:15; Psalm 75:6–7; Luke 18:1; Exodus 20:12; Genesis 9:20–27; Genesis 49:1–2; Genesis 49:22–26
Summary—
Pastor Eric highlights the difference between instructors and fathers through 1 Corinthians 4:15. While the world offers countless voices that teach from a distance, true fathers speak identity, purpose, and truth into others. It explores five marks of biblical fatherhood: protector, provider, promoter, prayer warrior, and prophet. He emphasizes that true promotion comes from God and culminates with Jacob’s blessing over Joseph in Genesis 49, showing the power of speaking God’s promises, identity, and destiny over the next generation.
Key Takeaways—
Fathers do more than instruct—they speak identity, purpose, and truth into the lives of others.
Biblical fatherhood is marked by five qualities: protector, provider, promoter, prayer warrior, and prophet.
Protecting and providing are the foundation, but true fatherhood also lifts up and invests in others.
True promotion comes from God, not from striving for recognition or status.
Fathers are called to pray intentionally and speak God’s promises and purpose over the next generation.
Honoring parents and embracing godly influence helps establish a legacy of faith and blessing.
Discussion Questions—
What’s the difference between someone who teaches you and someone who truly speaks identity and purpose into your life?
How does biblical fatherhood go beyond protecting and providing to include promoting, praying for, and encouraging others?
How does knowing that promotion comes from God change the way you pursue success and recognition?
Why is honoring parents important, even when they are imperfect, and what does that look like in practice?
How can you intentionally pray for and speak God’s truth, purpose, and encouragement over the next generation?
What words have shaped your life, and what words of life and blessing can you speak into someone else this week?
Practical Application—
Speak life – Write a blessing over your children (or spiritual children), praying God’s purpose, promises, and future over their lives.
Invest and honor – Intentionally encourage a younger person and find a meaningful way to honor your father or mother this week.
Pray and promote – Commit to daily prayer for your family and look for one opportunity to promote, encourage, or invest in someone else.
Closing Prayer—
Close your session by praying as a group. Pray for healing and restoration in father-child relationships, asking God to bring forgiveness, reconciliation, and hope where there has been hurt. Ask Him to raise up godly fathers and spiritual fathers who will lead, encourage, pray for, and speak truth into the next generation. Thank God for the people who have invested in your life and helped shape your faith. Pray for wisdom to speak life, identity, and God’s purpose over others, and ask for the humility and courage to move beyond building your own legacy to intentionally promoting and investing in those God has placed around you.
